This notebook is a field guide that you will write. You are the naturalist, and you are the author. Field guides are invaluable tools for identifying plants, animals, and other natural objects, and the process of learning about and observing an organism thoroughly enough to create your own field guide entry allows you to consistently and accurately identify that organism long into the future.

This notebook is also a nature journal—a place to interpret what you see in the natural world in a way that is personally meaningful. Through journaling about nature, you can cultivate a sense of place and a connection to the nature that exists within your community, at a park near your home, or even as close as your own backyard.

This is also a lab notebook. All scientists keep notebooks to record data and observations from field work and experiments. Lab notebooks should be complete and accurate, and record failures as well as successes. Write everything down. Create charts, diagrams, and lists. Record observations from all of your senses. The process of finding answers inevitably leads to more questions; you can write those down here, too.

Finally, this notebook can be used to track your achievements. Sometimes it can be hard to remember all of your experiences. Record each of your investigations, experiments, and outings. Don't forget to write the date! Before long, you'll be surprised at all that you have accomplished.
